We're teaming up with Mobile Blue Hands event that combines the artistry of indigo dyeing with an educational lecture delivered by Naomi Falk titled "Contemporary Indigo and Fiber Artists". This event is perfect for both beginners and those with experience in textile arts.

Into the Blue: Contemporary Indigo and Fiber Artists

Naomi J. Falk’s presentation and discussion, “Into the Blue: Contemporary Indigo and Fiber Artists” will provide an overview of contemporary indigo and fiber artists from around the world.

Spend time with us indigo dyeing during this unique event. Learn some easy resist techniques and dye some beautiful pieces in indigo for you to take home and show to friends and family. Bring your own natural fiber tee shirts or use ours, supplies are limited. Have something small, like washcloths or a tired pair of linen pants, you'd like to overdye or change? Bring it and make it beautiful.

Join us for a blue afternoon dedicated to indigo! We will begin with a lecture on the fascinating history of this infamous plant, followed by a hands-on dyeing experience with Blue Hands Art Mobile Dye Lab led by artists from the Blue Hands Collective. Lunch and materials are included, and you are encouraged  to bring along old, worn, natural fiber items such as a shirt, pair of pants or old cloth napkins that could use a refreshing blue makeover. The only stipulation is they are made of natural fibers like cotton or linen. Anything with polyester or nylon will not dye

At first glance, one might wonder how dyeing is similar to quilting.  We  will explore how these two activities were impactful in the lives of marginalized women. A small sample project will be made during the session

The natural dye cochineal is famous for the blood red color it can produce. Given the right conditions, however, this versatile natural dye can adopt an even wider color palette. During this workshop, participants will explore how to shift the color of cochineal-dyed wool yarn using 20 different combinations of mordant and pH modifiers. Participants will then create a swatch card from their own samples to take home and guide future experimentation. The instructor will also provide a brief explanation—tailored to the interest of natural dyers—of how and why mordants and pH shift dye color. Previous mordanting and dyeing experience is helpful but not required.
